‘It’s all over’

‘It’s all over’

‘We just have to accept it’. The PSV players were obviously disappointed when they had slipped to a 1-0 defeat at AZ in the AFAS Stadion on Sunday afternoon. “The title race is over”, admitted captain Luuk de Jong in his post-match interview.

Ajax head into the final game of the season against De Graafschap with a three-point advantage over PSV and they have a superior goal difference. “They are going to clinch the Eredivisie title”, said De Jong, who added that PSV have only themselves to blame. “We were sloppy in possession today. The way we conceded the only goal of the match says it all. We created some chances even if we did not play to our best, but did not take them.”

‘Stats don’t lie’
Denzel Dumfries also thought there was no other option but to accept the defeat. “You get what you deserve at the end of the day. We have to accept we were not good enough to retain the Eredivisie title but we will carry on next season with our heads held high”, said the full right back. Dumfries conceded a lot of things went wrong in Alkmaar. “These are hard facts. We just were not ourselves. Yet I am proud of our performances this season but it was not enough”, said Dumfries, riding an emotional rollercoaster. “We put on great displays in the first part of the season, but did not meet expectations in some games after the winter break. We have to give ourselves an honest assessment and we were not good enough to finish top of the league.”

‘Kept on fighting till the end’
Captain Luuk de Jong also briefly reviewed the past season. “We have always kept fighting till the end, but we played too many scrappy games and were forced to work hard to get back. We dropped valuable points, which cost us dearly.”
