Coen Dillen did it, in the fifties of the former century, and Theunissen did it, in the sixties: score five goals in a single match. And a third PSV player accomplished this truly extraordinary achievement on Saturday 14 September 2019. Donyell Malen earns a place in history with a five-goal haul against Vitesse. “I am proud to add my name to the list.”
Talk of town
After having scored five goals, Malen was obviously the Talk of town in the catacombs of the Philips Stadion. “Whether I scored five goals in a single match before”, reflected the striker who found the back of the net five times against Vitesse. “Yes, but I was only eight years old at the time”, he said, smiling brightly.
Moments to cherish
Malen marked his Netherlands debut with a memorable goal against Germany. “These are moments to cherish. I feel proud. Scoring on my Netherlands debut has given me a boost of energy and confidence.”
Van Bommel: ‘Could have conceded one or two goals’
Mark van Bommel enjoyed Malen’s performance hugely. “Scoring five goals is a rare phenomenon”, said PSV’s head coach, speaking after the game. “I am obviously happy with the 5-0 win, but I have to admit we could have conceded one or two goals. Vitesse had a great goal scoring opportunity early on before we started to up our game. We patiently passed the ball around and scored a third goal seconds after the restart. And then it was actually game over.”
