Mark van Bommel spoke to the media at his weekly press briefing on Friday afternoon ahead of Sunday’s clash with Fortuna Sittard in the Philips Stadion. The game comes too early for Hirving Lozano, who sustained a concussion against FC Groningen last weekend. “We will take no risks on Lozano”, said Van Bommel.
FIFA concussion guidelines
PSV’s head coach first provided an injury update. “The Australia internationals Aziz Behich and Trent Sainsbury will join up with the senior squad after the weekend, while long-term absentee Ryan Thomas has embarked on his first running sessions.” Mexican winger Hirving Lozano, who sustained a concussion in last week’s 2-1 win over FC Groningen, is also ruled out of Sunday’s game. “We strictly follow FIFA’s concussion guidelines but can confirm that he has sustained a concussion. He must be 100% well and will first have to return to full fitness before he can play again.”
Chucky will watch the game from the stands on Sunday afternoon and see his team mates take on Fortuna Sittard, currently sitting tenth in the Eredivisie. They beat Feyenoord in the Rotterdam Kuip, while PSV and Ajax were made to work for a win in Sittard. Van Bommel is not surprised by Fortuna Sittard’s good run of form. “I predicted at the start of the season that Fortuna Sittard could be the surprise package of the season. Their manager has a tight-knit backroom staff and has a clear intention of how he wants his team to play. Head coach Kevin Hofland and his assistant Kristof Aelbrecht know how to put their ideas across to their squad.”
A five-point lead
PSV look to extend their winning streak in the Eredivisie and maintain a five-point lead over Ajax, who suffered a 6-2 shock defeat at the hands of Feyenoord. “It was a stunning result. Ajax saw the gap to us widen to five points and we will do our very best to extend out lead at the top of the table”, concluded Mark van Bommel.
