A serious injury to Mees Kreekels marred PSV U21’s goalless draw with Excelsior in Rotterdam on Friday night.
Mees Kreekels suffers injury
The match started in disastrous fashion for Mees Kreekels. The defender appeared to suffer a terrible injury in the fifth minute and was stretchered off the pitch. Dennis Vos came off the bench to replace him. The hosts tested PSV U21’s German goalkeeper Vincent Müller who pulled off a fine reflex save. At the other end, PSV U21 striker Fode Fofana tried his luck from long range but Excelsior shot stopper Alessandro Damen comfortably gathered his effort. Tijn Daverveld came close when his header from a corner was cleared off the line. Both teams played a high-tempo game, with plenty of end-to-end stuff, and won some corners. Fofana produced a goal threat when he wiggled his way past four defenders but he could not fire on target when under pressure from the fifth defender. The biggest chance of the first half fell to Fofana, too, but he sent a shot inches wide of the left-hand post. HT: 0-0
Lots of chances but no goals
PSV went in search of an opening goal after the break. Daverveld produced another header that went over the bar and Damian Timan curled a free kick from twenty yards out just wide of the post. With twenty minutes remaining and Excelsior forward looked to break the deadlock but he saw his effort go across the face of goal. Mathias Kjølø started a macy solo run but failed to apply the finish while substitute Jeremy Antonisse forced Damen into another save. Both teams had their moments in the hectic closing stages but Müller as well as Damen were alert and kept a clean sheet in the end. FT: 0-0.
