PSV registered a narrow but deserved 1-0 win in the Hitachi Capital Mobilty Stadion on Sunday afternoon. Captain Denzell was again the hero when he scored the only goal of the match on 16 minutes.
Dumfries puts PSV ahead
The opening exchanges were fairly even, with neither side creating any chances. PSV then began to dominate and right back Denzel Dumfries gave them the lead in the 16th minute, taking his goal scoring tally for the season to seven. It was a carbon-copy strike from last season, when he bagged a last-gasp winner. Jorrit Hendrix played a long ball into the path of PSV’s captain, who showed great determination when he burst down the right flank before firing home from a very tight angle: 0-1. Ernest Faber’s team worked hard and put in a solid first half display. They enjoyed the bulk of possession and most of the action took place in the FC Groningen half. PSV had two half chances to double the lead. Ritsu Doan, who was handed a start against his former club, went close, while FC Groningen keeper Sergio Padt made a decent save to deny Sam Lammers.
PSV hold on for a win
The home side were looking to change the game after the break but did not really carry a threat. PSV were in control but could not create any chances of note either. Ricardo Rodríguez, who had played with great composure as left back, sustained an injury in the 68th minute and Olivier Boscagli came off the bench to replace him. FC Groningen began to push high up the pitch, while PSV looked to protect their slender lead. Keeper Lars Unnerstal, who had hardly been called into action, made a terrific reflex save on 73 minutes. Noni Madueke, who turns eighteen next Tuesday, made way for Bruma four minutes. With fifteen minutes remaining, FC Groningen began to pile up the pressure on the PSV defence. Ahmed El Messaoudi tried his luck from long range but Lars Unnerstall made another save to keep his team in the game. Faber made his final change on 82 minutes, bringing on Kostas Mitroglou for Sam Lammers. Five minutes of extra time were added and PSV held on for an important win. They will be back in Eredivisie action on Saturday 14 March when they host FC Emmen.
