PSV striker Donyell Malen has been selected as the Eredivisie player for the month of September. According to Opta Sports, leaders in sports data, Malen was the top-performing player in the Dutch league this month.
Malen netted seven goals during the month of September, including five strikes against Vitesse, following in the footsteps of Jonathan Reis who scored five goals in one match in October 2010. Malen scored a goal against Germany on his Netherlands debut and is the current Eredivisie top scorer. He is the third player to score five goals in an Eredivisie game for PSV after Bert Theunissen in 1964 and Coen Dillen in 1959. He had 21 efforts on target, more than any other Eredivisie player.
UEFA nominated 20-year-old Malen for the title of the best player in round two of the Europa League after he scored twice in the match with Rosenborg. He is the tournament’s current leader with three goals in two matches.
