PSV head coach Phillip Cocu told the media at the post-match conference that he was satisfied with his team’s 1-0 win over AZ. “We ’re growing as a team. We need to me more efficient in front of goal, but our performance was far better than last week’s display at FC Utrecht”, said Cocu, speaking after the game.
‘Dominated the game’
Phillip Cocu was particularly pleased with his team’s style of play. “I felt we dominated for almost the entire match”, he said. “But we didn’t kill off the game. If we had doubled our lead, we would have cruised to victory. AZ only threatened when we made defensive mistakes”, said Cocu, who wished AZ the best of luck in Thursday’s UEFA Europe League play-off game at Voivodina Novi Sad.
‘PSV deserved to win’
AZ boss John van den Brom thought PSV fully deserved to win. “We had made the trip to Eindhoven with the aim to make it an exciting and close game and that’s what we’ve done. We were cautious as we knew PSV have the capacity to break down defences and we didn’t give away too much space. We hoped to strike on the counter-attack and we were pretty successful in the first half. But we needed to push forward when Moreno had broken the deadlock after the break. We had some half chances but couldn’t create any real clear chances. And I must admit that at the end of the day we didn’t deserve more than a narrow defeat”, concluded AZ’s head coach.
