Cocu senses Sparta deja vu

Phillip Cocu was a PSV player in the 1996 KNVB Beker final. PSV faced Sparta and PSV’s current head coach was inspirational, opening the scoring and guiding his team to a 5-2 victory. PSV lifted the Cup for the seventh time in history.

Equally matched
Looking at the previous encounters between Sparta and PSV, the two teams look pretty much equally matched. They faced each other eight times before. Both PSV and Sparta won three matches and two KNVB Beker ties ended in a draw.

Last win in  2003
Sparta do not enjoy too many cherished memories of playing Eredivisie teams in Cup encounters. They last recorded a victory in 2003, when they beat RBC. Since then, they have lost ten matches and three were decided on penalties. Sparta remained unbeaten at home in their past four KNVB Beker matches, though. They experienced the sweet taste of success three times and drew one time, while PSV recorded eight away wins out of nine.

Former Sparta players
PSV last met Sparta in Rotterdam in a KNVB Beker tie in 2010. Stef Nijland netted one goal and Danny Koevermans bagged a brace to secure a 3-0 win for PSV. Koevermans started his career as a professional player at Sparta. PSV’s left back Jetro Willems made his debut for Sparta before he made a move to PSV in 2011.
