PSV head coach Phillip Cocu was visibly happy after he watched his side grab a late 2-1 win against Willem II.
Cocu´s reaction to PSV´s comeback
“We staged a brave second-half comeback”, said Cocu at the post-match conference. “We started the game poorly. We defended too deep and could not cope with Willem II´s pressure very well. We were caught napping when they scored the opening goal. We had several chances to equalise but Kostas Lamprou made a number of excellent saves to deny us.” Cocu praised PSV´s second-half display. “We upped a gear during the closing stages after the penalty miss. We just carried on and our confidence paid off in the end when we earned all three points”, said Cocu. Georginio Wijnaldum picked up a knock in the first half and needed treatment. He was taken off in the 72nd minute after all. “Wijnaldum played through the pain barrier for some time but eventually was taken off as we did not want to take any risks”, concluded Cocu
Streppel proud in spite of defeat
Willem II boss Jurgen Streppel was proud of his team’s efforts despite falling to a 2-1 defeat. “I’ve just left a disappointed dressing room. We were again left empty-handed. We intended to continue the second half in the same vein as the first half, but we just could not manage to survive PSV´s siege. We thought we might snatch a win here when PSV missed a penalty, but unfortunately they struck twice in the closing stages to claim a late win. But I am really proud of my team and our display tonight”, said Streppel.
