Phillip Cocu looked ahead to his side’s first home game of the new campaign during his weekly press briefing at De Herdgang training facilities on Friday afternoon. PSV’s head coach has a fully fit squad to choose from when PSV play host to AZ on Sunday, with a 16.45 kick-off.
Phillip Cocu first of all looked back at last weekend’s 2-1 away win at FC Utrecht. “We were not pleased with our first-half display, but Utrecht are a well organised team and wanted to entertain the home crowd in their opening game of the season. It just confirms what I have said often before. You have to reach a high level in order to win games. But we have taken the positives from our 2-1 win into the next game. We came from behind after we had made a tactical change, which made me happy. Yet I want us to dictate our rhythm and proceedings from the first whistle.”
‘AZ have quick and agile wingers’
Cocu was in a cautious mood ahead of Sunday’s game against AZ. “I expect another tough game. AZ are a good team with quick and agile wingers. They play football with a recognisable brand and their coach John van den Brom has introduced the passing game”, said Cocu. AZ were held to a 2-2 draw at home to sc Heerenveen in their season’s opener..
Cocu was asked if he would bolster the squad with new signings. He replied that a huge amount of work is being done behind the scenes. “I am sure we will welcome some new faces.” “Before 1 September? “ “I don’t know but I keep that option open.” Cocu confirmed PSV are in the market for new players but was not willing to reveal any names. PSV’s head coach added that some players may very well leave the club before the transfer window closes in two weeks‘ time. “Some players face uncertain times and that’s what we keep in mind when we announce the starting line-up.”
