José Angeliño returns to Manchester City after a great first campaign at the Philips Stadion. The Premier League champions sold 22-year-old Angeliño to PSV last summer and the Spanish left back immediately became a key player in Mark van Bommel’s squad.
José Ángel Esmorís Tasende, commonly known as Angeliño, put pen to paper on a five-year deal in Eindhoven after having spent the previous season on loan at NAC Breda. Under Mark van Bommel, he immediately established himself in the side. The Spaniard made 34 Eredivisie appearances, scoring one goal, and showed boundless energy, constantly bursting down the left flank and delivering pin-point crosses. Angeliño has nine assists to his name last season.
European top flight
Angeliño also held his own in the UEFA Champions League, making eight appearances in the European top flight, including the playoff games with BATE Borisov. The full left back was rewarded for a string of fine displays with a first call-up to the Spain U21 squad. “If you had told me one year ago that I would join PSV from NAC Breda, would play Eredivisie as well as Champions League football and that I would also be called up to the Spain U21 squad, I would never have believed you. I hoped to make progress but had never expected things would move so fast. I had actually given up hope of ever playing for my country. I’m very happy and grateful my dreams have come true”, he told PSV Magazine last spring.
