Ibrahim Afellay, who has been named as PSV’s new captain for the 2019/20 season, accompanied head coach Mark van Bommel on Thursday afternoon at the conference ahead of Saturday’s season opener against Eredivisie champions Ajax. “No extra motivation is needed to for a clash with Ajax.”
Speaks from experience
Afellay speaks from experience. Before he left PSV, the newly-appointed captain always looked to win silverware and Ajax frequently proved to be a tough challenge for PSV. “Honour and prestige are at stake”, confirmed the 33-year-old. “No extra motivation is needed when you take on Ajax to win the Dutch Super Cup. But Tuesday’s return leg against FC Basel is even more important”, admitted Afellay.
‘Will not fix any date’
Afellay previewed Saturday’s game at the Amsterdam Arena, but that does not mean he will make his comeback from injury. “Things are going smoothly, but I will not fix any date. Of course I would love to make a comeback but it is not a realistic option yet”, said Afellay, who was named PSV’s new captain for the 2019/20 season earlier this week. “I’ve worn the captain’s armband before at PSV so it’s not a major change for me. I have gained experience, though.”
Whether Ibi was surprised to be appointed captain? “Well, I definitely think it is an honour, but nothing much will change”, said Afellay who explained what it means to captain the PSV side. “Always stay true to yourself and attempt to be a natural leader.”
