“We want to finish the season strongly”

Roger Schmidt wants to finish the season strongly. He may give some promising youngsters a chance to shine against N.E.C. Nijmegen in his last home game as PSV head coach. “It’s important for their development to make the next step”, he told the media at a press briefing on Tuesday afternoon..

Final home game of the season
“It’s the final home game of the season, which is always a special one”, said Schmidt. “We want to finish the season strongly  with two wins from our two remaining games. We would like to treat our loyal fans to an attractive and entertaining game. But N.E.C. need the points to keep their hopes of the playoffs alive.”

Important win
PSV earned a 2-0 win in Nijmegen in this season’s reverse encounter. Schmidt has vivid memories of that day. “It was an important win in many respects. We got off to a poor start to the game. We put pressure on their defence and created a lot of chances. We scored a late winner to bag all three points and move to the top of the table.”

In-depth squad
“Maxi Romero provided the lovely, acrobatic assist and Carlos Vinícius tapped home the winning goal:, said Schmidt. “It sums up our season. We’ve used a lot of players due to a growing injury list. Each player has played his part and I can only heap praise on the substitutes and fringe players. They’ve shown great character this season and were ready and raring to go, also when they operated in unfamiliar positions. I appreciate their stamina and fighting spirit a lot.”

Promising youngsters
Roger Schmidt’s match squad will be largely unchanged. “Joey Veerman is doubtful for Wednesday as he has picked up a calf injury in the clash with Feyenoord.  Ryan Thomas, André Ramalho, Yorbe Vertessen, Carlos Vinícius, Olivier Boscagli, Phillipp Mwene and Armando Obispo are out for the rest of the season. The PSV U21 players Johan Bakayoko, Mathias Kjølø, Dennis Vos and Jenson Seelt will be added to the match squad. These promising youngsters may get a chance to shine against N.E.C.”, concluded Schmidt.
