Now that the international break is over, PSV return to Eredivisie action again. Roger Schmidt spoke to the media ahead of Saturday’s fixture against AZ in Alkmaar. PSV’s head coach first of all provided the latest injury and team news during his weekly press briefing on Friday afternoon. News signing Carlos Vinícius is not available yet because some of the paperwork must still be sorted out, while Davy Pröpper also misses the game, due to injury.
Gakpo and Sangaré are doubtful
Cody Gakpo and Ibrahim Sangaré are doubtful for Saturday’s clash. Both players, who impressed in PSV’s last few league games, have not come back unscathed from international duty. Gakpo withdrew from the Netherlands squad last Tuesday after he had sustained an injury in Saturday’s 4-0 win over Montenegro. He returned to PSV Campus De Herdgang to be assessed by PSV’s medical staff. “We have some options to replace Ibrahim in midfield: Olivier Boscagli, Érick Gutiérrez or Ryan Thomas could deputise for him. We will see what is the best option if Ibrahim is not fit enough to start.”
PSV have won their three opening games of the new Eredivisie season and are top of the league when they take on AZ in Alkmaar for their first big game of the campaign. PSV failed to run out winners against one of the big teams in the Dutch league in their last sixteen outings. “I don’t think it is very useful to look back at matches in previous seasons and make comparisons”, said Schmidt, who was asked to comment on the fact that some key players have left AZ during the summer transfer window. ”Players come and go and it gives newcomers a chance to shine. I think AZ can still field a very strong side and we look forward to meeting them tomorrow night.”
