‘Big teams will always show imperturbability’

After the midweek Champions League clash with BATE Borisov, Mark van Bommel previewed Saturday’s game at home to Willem II, during his weekly press briefing on Friday afternoon. PSV’s head coach does not take the upcoming opponents lightly. “Willem II are tough opponents and, again, we have warned the players of the dangers of underestimating a team such as Willem II. I know it’s a cliché but we just can’t underestimate any team. We must be imperturbed, stolid and fearless.”

Imperturbed and fearless
Van Bommel continued: “I have tried to explain this before a couple of times. You should always be imperturbed and fearless as a player and as a team. Motivation has to come from inside of you, no matter what team you face. Big teams and quality players will always be able to show this imperturbability and fearlessness.  That’s why they play top football for many years on end. We are taking steps to realise that.”

Impressive display
PSV put in an impressive display against BATE Borisov on Wednesday. They have been lauded by the fans and the press for a fine performance and an attractive style of play. Van Bommel: “But if we do not perform at the level we did against BATE, it does not mean we are putting in a poor display. Top teams do not always do exactly what they hoped to achieve. But if things do not go according to plan, you must always fight and show spirit. Then you will come a long way, although it will never guarantee you will always win your games.”

Van Bommel does not expect any more activities on the transfer deadline day and is satisfied with PSV’s summer window. ‘I am very happy with the way out interim Director of Football John de Jong has done everything he could to recruit some new players.”
