PSV head coach Roger Schmidt guided his team to a 1-0 victory over FC Groningen in the first game after the winter break. Schmidt was happy with the result but realised there is also room for improvement.
‘A job well done’
“I am happy with the win”, said PSV’s head coach, speaking to the press after the game. “We took an early lead but did not play the perfect game. It would have been reassuring to have doubled our lead but I am happy we showed character and took the three points. It was a job well done and we will now carry on and continue to work hard.”
Joey Veerman made his debut for PSV and Schmidt thought the new signing had done well as a substitute. “I am proud of him”, said Schmidt. “He was part of the team the moment he had entered the fray. He showed fighting spirit and delivered a string of fine passes. He certainly played his part in winning the game.”
PSV host Telstar in a KNVB Beker tie on Thursday before they welcome Ajax in the Philips Stadion next Sunday. It is a crucial meeting but Schmidt keeps a cool head. “We take the Cup seriously and want to progress to the next round. And we have an opportunity to find some match rhythm ahead of Sunday’s encounter with Ajax.”
