PSV O19 drew against their Shakhtar Donetsk peers in the fifth match of the UEFA Youth League. Vincent Heilmann 's team was the superior side, but the draw leaves them with little chance of wintering.
First half
The match starts energetically, with PSV soon getting a free kick in a promising spot after a solid foul. Robin van Duiven tries it immediately, but his shot lands in the wall. Not much later, Floris Bos tries to surprise the opponent's goalkeeper with a clever effort from its own half. However, the ball travels too long, making it easy for the goalkeeper to intervene.
The visitors are playing increasingly physical, which leads to some tough fouls. PSV is not intimidated and remains the better team. In the 24th minute, Van Duiven seems to break the spell, but his goal is disallowed due to offside. PSV creates some small chances, but no real threat. At the other end, the opponent hardly creates anything. Both teams go into the break without a goal.
Second half
After halftime, the opponent makes their first appearance. However, a shot from distance in the 51st minute presents no problems for Tijn Smolenaars, which catches the ball easily. PSV responds with high pressure and puts immediate pressure. Less than a minute later, Van Duiven is again close to a goal with a header, but the ball ends up on top of the goal.
The deserved lead follows shortly thereafter. A foul just outside the penalty area earns PSV a free kick. Van Duiven shoots, but hits an arm of a defender in the wall. The referee points to the spot. The striker gets behind the ball himself and puts PSV into a deserved 1-0 lead in the 55th minute. Yet the equalizer does not take long to come.
A poorly cleared corner caused chaos in the defense, allowing the visitors to tap in the 1-1.
Meanwhile, the tension is also mounting along the sidelines, where a staff member of the Ukrainian team receives a red card after persistent protest. PSV continues to press, but fails to get back into the lead. The match ends in a disappointing 1-1 draw, despite a strong performance by the home side.
Because PSV O19 now has three points from five matches, it must win in the last round to have any chance of winning the winter.
