Beaches in the quarterfinals is a bitter pill for PSV. The team saw a lead against Leicester City for a long time, but still had to acknowledge its superiority to the English team in the closing stages. Roger Schmidt and Eran Zahavi react to the disappointing game.
Punished
"It was a very difficult match, but in my opinion we did well," Zahavi says. "We gave everything and really fought. Then it's hard to accept that we then get two goals against in the last minutes. We had chances for the 2-0 ourselves and didn't make it. Leicester City punished that mercilessly. It's hard to explain how that feels but we win as a team and we lose as a team."
Supporters
After the game, the players were received by the supporters with loud applause, despite the disappointing result. Zahavi appreciated the heart felt: "The supporters were great tonight. It wasn't down to them. We also have to look forward again. Sunday we have a cup final coming up and it's important now to keep our heads up. We are going to give everything next game and we believe in ourselves."
Possibilities
Schmidt's disappointment was also evident. "I think we played a good game despite everything. We showed a lot of fighting spirit and there were moments to score the second goal, but we didn't take advantage of them," said the Head Coach. "They did take their moments well, which hurt us. We have to accept that they had more power at the end. Still, I'm very proud of the team."
Looking back
"Looking back on the European season, I'm especially sorry it's over. We gave everything to represent PSV as well as we could at the international level. It was a long European series where we played many good matches," Schmidt said. The Head Coach now sets his sights on the cup final: "When I get up tomorrow I will only think about the cup final. No more about this match."
