Luuk de Jong acknowledged afterwards that PSV got away well with a win over Fortuna Sittard. In Limburg, the captain saw Dante Rigo shoot in the final minute to make it 1-2. "It was just a tough match," he told FOX Sports.
Not good
"When you only make 1-2 at the end, you come away well. Fortuna also did well," De Jong said. "At halftime we said to each other that sometimes we had to give the ball faster and try to get into the spaces between midfield and the opponent's defense. We didn't do that enough. We just didn't play well."
Before Fortuna came alongside, De Jong appeared to be the victim of a foul. Referee Pol van Boekel, however, allowed the game to continue. "I indeed thought a foul was called," De Jong agreed. "What should I do then? Lie down on the ground?" Van Bommel agreed with his captain. "Fortunately we win, but if it becomes 1-1 here then you still think: pot verdict."
Wake up
According to PSV's head coach, however, the 1-1 made by Fortuna was necessary to wake up his team. "We very much want to do it all right, but after the 0-1 we no longer had the patience to create chances. Then it all looks a little less sharp. The 1-1 was exactly the signal we needed. I can't quite explain how that works in the heads, but that's how it goes. We should be happy that Fortuna made the 1-1 early in the second half, because that gave us time to recover."
