PSV O19 played its second match of the UEFA Youth League on Tuesday afternoon at PSV Campus De Herdgang. Coach Vincent Heilmann's team created many chances, but failed to win against their peers from Portugal.
The first shot of the match on the PSV side comes in the eighth minute from Joël van den Berg, but his attempt is blocked by a defender. The first serious work for Portuguese goalkeeper Miguel Gouveia follows shortly after, when Sami Bouhoudane pulls the trigger. Not much later, Ayodele Thomas gets a great chance in a one-on-one with goalkeeper Gouveia, but his shot is turned away.
The game continues to go back and forth, and now it is Sporting CP that gets a huge chance. Tijn Smolenaars was far in front of his goal, but managed to stop the attack with his left leg. On the stroke of halftime, the visitors make it 1-0. Alfonso Moreira is the celebrated man of the Southern European side.
Not enough
Sporting CP came out of the locker room strong and managed to put the 2-0 on the scoreboard right away. After a short variant of a corner kick, Eduardo Felicissimo headed the ball into the top right corner. Vincent Heillman's team now has quite a job to do to turn the tide, but there is no shortage of confidence. Noah Fernandez dribbles into the visitors' penalty area, but encounters a load of defenders.
PSV O19 gets several small chances after that, while time becomes the biggest enemy. Noah comes close again in the 80th minute through a nice attack, but shoots the ball just over the goal. In the closing stages of the match, Jaïro Beerens creates another chance. However, the score was already decided at the beginning of the second half and PSV O19 lost 2-0 to Sporting CP O19.
