Red Bacuna, De Jong misses penalty
In a lively first half, it was not the goals that drew attention, but FC Groningen's many fouls. Especially Juninho Bacuna literally had his hands and feet full with the PSV players. Not surprisingly, he was sent off with two yellow cards after half an hour. Despite the man more situation, PSV could not really take advantage. Groningen defended compactly, making it difficult for Phillip Cocu's team to create chances. Still, PSV should have taken the lead. Shortly before halftime, referee Nijhuis pointed to the spot when Narsingh was brought down, Luuk de Jong shot the ball straight at Sergio Padt.

Earlier in the first half, Andrés Guardado prevented a deficit by recovering his own ball loss in front of the goal line. After halftime, it was one-way traffic toward the Groningen goal, which produced chance after chance, especially in the opening stages of the second half. Luuk de Jong nodded over and found a keeper in his path, Guardado Padt's fingertips and Nicolas Isimat the side netting. Attempts by Jorrit Hendrix and Gastón Pereiro also failed to find the target. About 25 minutes before time, the rush on goal subsided somewhat. PSV obviously still looked for the FC Groningen goal, but no real big chances were created. Thus it remained 0-0 despite more than 30 shots by PSV.
