PSV will battle Feyenoord on Sunday for the first prize of the season. In the traditional season opener between champion and cup winner, PSV can prolong the Johan Cruijff Schaal. Last season, PSV won its tenth bowl by beating FC Groningen 3-0. This time around, the Johan Cruijff Schaal will be dedicated to Johan Cruijff more than once.
Cruijff
It is the first time the duel between the champion and cup winners has been held since Johan Cruijff died this year at the age of 68. The KNVB is therefore also pausing to commemorate Cruijff's death prior to the match. Afterwards, PSV and Feyenoord will take on each other. PSV, which saw Jeffrey Bruma, Marco van Ginkel, Maxime Lestienne and Stijn Schaars leave this summer, will be aiming for prolongation of the 'Super Cup'.
3-0
Indeed, last season PSV won the battle for the Johan Cruijff Schaal with convincing figures. In the Amsterdam ArenA, FC Groningen were beaten 3-0 thanks to goals by Luuk de Jong (2) and Adam Maher. It was the tenth Johan Cruijff Schaal in club history, a number that PSV holds the record for. Feyenoord last won the inaugural award in 1999. Back then, Ajax were beaten 3-2. The Rotterdammers, who were beaten twice by PSV last season, had a good preparation ahead of Sunday's game. The match can be seen live on SBS6 from 18:00 on Sunday, with the preview starting half an hour earlier. Serdar Gözübüyük is the referee on Sunday.
