PSV set a new club record with a 2-0 win over Heracles Almelo. The victory by goals from Memphis and Willems was the 28th this season. The old record stood at 27.
Beautiful free kick Memphis
Just like two weeks ago against Excelsior, PSV also entered the match against Heracles Almelo with a changed eleven. Remko Pasveer played in place of Jeroen Zoet, Jürgen Locadia replaced Luciano Narsingh in the starting line-up. With these two players at the start, PSV went looking for the opening goal from the first minute, but Phillip Cocu's team failed to combine through Heracles' defense in the first half hour. On PSV's side, Memphis was the most dangerous man through three free kicks. His first was an easy prey for Heracles goalkeeper Castro, the second Memphis shot brilliantly from about 25 meters. Soon after, it was almost 2-0 in the same way, this time Castro processed the striker's free kick into a corner. Five minutes before halftime, PSV had another chance at the 2-0, but from a cross by Jetro Willems, Luuk de Jong headed over.
Applause change Memphis
Determined to give the visitors one more good game of football in their final home game, PSV started the second half with a lot of passion and fight. Within five minutes, Memphis thought he had scored his second from a low cross from Georginio Wijnaldum, but Memphis was whistled back for offside. Immediately the next big chance presented itself through Adam Maher, however, his distance shot hit the post. In the 64th minute the goal was struck. Willems also scored from distance and his shot ended up in the goal. In the last fifteen minutes, PSV had plenty of chances to increase the score. Maher and Willems shot wide and De Jong headed over twice. Five minutes before time, Memphis aimed between the posts, but Castro saved. Phillip Cocu then gave the striker a crowd change. Abel Tamata also got an applause change. He was replaced by Suently Alberto, who made his debut for PSV.
PSV breaks club record
The victory over Heracles Almelo marked PSV's 28th win this season. Phillip Cocu's team thus improved its own club record. That stood at 27, from the 1985-1986 and 2004-2005 seasons. PSV now stands at 85 points this season. If they also win next week against ADO Den Haag, PSV will also set a points record. The highest number of points ever in a single season now stands at 87, with a win over ADO Den Haag PSV lifts that record to 88.
