Marco van Ginkel is definitely the captain of PSV. Head coach Roger Schmidt just announced this during the press conference, in which he and Van Ginkel looked ahead to the match against Galatasaray. Cody Gakpo will be PSV's reserve captain next season behind Van Ginkel. In addition to Van Ginkel and Gakpo, the players' council consists of André Ramalho, Nick Viergever and Mario Götze.
Return
With Van Ginkel's designation, the band returns around the arm of the last captain to become champion with PSV. Van Ginkel wore the band during PSV's 2017-2018 championship season. Afterwards, he returned to Chelsea before coming back to PSV on a rental basis last season. On the First Team side at PSV Academy De Herdgang, Van Ginkel became fit. Last summer, he signed permanently with PSV. Schmidt: "Marco is an experienced player with tremendous leadership skills. He has proven that here in the past. I am very happy that he got fit last season and can now make his mark on the pitch."
Cody Gakpo
Schmidt also explained his choice of Cody Gakpo as reserve captain: "With Cody we have someone in our selection who has played at PSV from a young age. He knows the club through and through and has a lot of love for PSV. He can convey that to the group and on the pitch can sometimes give just that little bit of extra energy needed to deliver a good performance."
