Orange O20 is through to the quarterfinals of the World Cup in Colombia. The promising team defeated their peers France 2-1. PSV player Fleur Stoit signed the winning goal in the extension.
Netherlands O20 started with all four PSV players traveling with them in the starting lineup: Veerle Buurman, Emma Frijns, Robine Lacroix and Fleur Stoit. France took the lead 15 minutes before halftime through Juliette Mossard. Fortunately, Jet van Beijeren evened the score in the 59th minute. Although France shot another ball at the post in the final minute, it remained tied in regular playing time.
The extension became a prey for the Orange. Thanks to a goal by Fleur, the Netherlands took a deserved lead. Although it became exciting, the Netherlands did not give this lead away. The team rewarded itself with a place in the quarterfinals. "We battled, fought and battled," said coach Roos Kwakkenbos. "We spent an awful lot of time being combative and unflappable, and that paid off here. Wonderful."
Quarterfinal
In the quarterfinals, the Netherlands will meet host nation Colombia, which so far has played all its matches in a sold-out stadium. The match will be played on Sunday night at 11:30 p.m.
