Last season, PSV won the away game from Excelsior 3-2. It was PSV's first game as national champions. After halftime, the home team took the lead after an own goal by Luuk de Jong. Georginio Wijnaldum scored the equalizer, but just over a quarter of an hour before time Jeff Stans put the home team back in the lead from the penalty spot. With ten men, after two yellow cards for Nicolas Isimat, PSV turned the deficit around through goals by Memphis and Jürgen Locadia to eventually win 3-2.

Champion
On May 28, 1987, PSV played a special "away game" against Excelsior. In De Koel in Venlo, the team won 3-2 over the Rotterdammers, taking the national title. Ronald Koeman (2) and Ruud Gullit scored for PSV, Michel Beukers and Cees Schapendonk did the same for the Rotterdammers.
