In a bizarre final, PSV captured the 50th prize in club history. After falling behind in the first half, Ruud van Nistelrooij's formation eventually managed to shake off Ajax via penalty kicks. Fábio Silva crowned himself matchwinner by shooting in the decisive penalty.
Despite the fact that a thick layer of smoke hung over the field, the game kicked off a little after 6 p.m. What followed was a heated, but also very promising game. Although neither team had a real claim to a goal, there was continuous threat around the penalty areas. Towards the end of the first half, PSV pushed harder. A number of corner kicks and free kicks did not lead to a goal. A counter by Ajax did and so PSV was 1-0 behind at halftime.
Equalizer
Over a year ago, PSV went to rest with the same score and equalized in the 53rd minute. As if that script had been copied, PSV now thought to score the 1-1 in the same minute, but offside threw a spanner in the works. Moments later, however, it was on target when substitute Thorgan Hazard, on a pass from Xavi Simons, finished in the 67th minute. Although there were still chances back and forth, at least an extension was needed to decide a winner.
Extension
PSV gets a great chance early in that double 15 minutes of extra playing time. Joey Veerman crossed beautifully from a free kick, but the players in front of goal failed to head it in. In the second half of the extension, PSV is dominant. The substitute Fábio Silva created a huge chance for himself, but his shot was blocked. After a penalty shootout, where there were mostly many missed, it was still the Portuguese striker who decided the final. He scored the winning goal after Drommel had cleared Álvarez's effort.
