The Philips Stadion will be the venue for the PSV - Ajax match on Sunday. The club maintains a good record against the Amsterdammers: PSV did not lose any of its last five mutual duels with Ajax in all competitions.
Last season, PSV and Ajax played each other four times, with PSV winning all encounters. In addition, for the first time since the 2004-2005 season, both the home and away game with Ajax in the Eredivisie were won (1-2 & 3-0). Luuk de Jong (2x) and Xavi Simons shot PSV to a victory at the Philips Stadium. A nice addition to the overall record against Ajax (W55-G27-V52).
Strong series
PSV is on its best series against Ajax in all competitions since the 1998-2002 period: nine meetings in a row without defeat (W6-G3-V0). A number of duels saw them play directly for prizes. In 2021-2022 and 2022-2023, the club captured both the Johan Cruijff Schaal and the TOTO KNVB Beker at Ajax's expense. Last year, penalty kicks had to decide the cup final. After Joël Drommel turned away an Ajax penalty, Fábio Silva shot PSV to victory.
Favorite of Luuk
Luuk de Jong has been on target against Ajax since his arrival at PSV. He scored in the last five league games against the club. No one player in the Eredivisie this century has been involved in as many goals against Ajax as the center striker. In his entire career, he scored eight goals against them and delivered three assists. Only Willy van der Kuijlen (nine) and Ruud van Nistelrooij (seven) scored as many goals against Ajax in the Eredivisie on behalf of PSV as De Jong (seven).
Anniversaries
The upcoming game could be a milestone for two defenders. If André Ramalho is in action against Ajax, it will be his 100th official game for PSV. Jordan Teze, meanwhile, could play his 100th Eredivisie game.
Both shirts
Several players from PSV and Ajax have a past with both clubs. Sergiño Dest and Noa Lang played in the youth and main team of the Amsterdammers, where head coach Peter Bosz was also at the helm for a year.
Ajax captain Steven Bergwijn in turn played years for PSV Academy, Young PSV and eventually more than a hundred duels for the main squad. With PSV 1, Bergwijn won the Johan Cruijff Schaal twice and the national championship three times.
