Spanish opponents
We still struggle at times against Spanish opponents in the UEFA Champions League. Out of 16 games, we won only two, one of which was fairly recent; On November 29, 2023, Ricardo Pepi completed a sensational comeback in the 92nd minute by scoring the winning goal against Sevilla FC. The other victory dates back to December 10, 2003. Then Deportivo La Coruña was the opponent. That game ended 3-2 and also then the decision waited until injury time. John de Jong scored the redeeming goal in the 94th minute.
League
Girona FC is currently 11th in the Spanish league. With 15 points from 12 games, the Catalans' league start is not as good as last season. In 2021, it was still playing at the second tier of Spain. With Daley Blind in defense, Girona FC finished third last season, behind superpowers Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.
Familiar faces
This summer, the Dutch impetus at the Spanish club has grown considerably. With the arrival of Donny van de Beek and Arnaud Danjuma, Blind is no longer the only Dutch international. Gabriel Misehouy is also going through the Dutch youth teams, but could yet play for Ghana. Former PSV player Savinho played for Girona FC last year, making him the only player to have played for both clubs.
