PSV faces the final hurdle on their way to the final of the TOTO KNVB Beker: the duel with Go Ahead Eagles. The team from Deventer visits the Philips Stadium. In the past both teams have faced each other twice in the cup.
One of those meetings took place in 2007, also at the Philips Stadium. Thanks to goals by Timmy Simons, Jefferson Farfán and Arouna Koné, PSV won and reached the quarterfinals of the cup. The most recent cup game was in 2022, when Go Ahead Eagles emerged as the opponent in the semifinals. The team of then-head coach Roger Schmidt had to overcome a 1-0 deficit, but through goals by Eran Zahavi and Joey Veerman, PSV won that game.
Past cup tournaments
In the past three years, PSV reached the cup final twice. In the 2021-2022 season, the club eliminated successively Fortuna Sittard, Telstar, NAC Breda and Go Ahead Eagles, forcing a final place against Ajax. That game was won in spectacular fashion: PSV came out of the locker room trailing, but completely turned the game around within one minute. Érick Gutiérrez headed in from a free kick, then Cody Gakpo found the short corner after a fine move and decided the game.
One year later, PSV again faced Ajax in the final, which again proved to be an exciting game. After regular playing time, the score stood at 1-1, after which penalty kicks brought the decision. Joël Drommel became the hero of the evening by stopping Edson Álvarez's effort. Fábio Silva remained cool and fired the winning penalty into the ropes.
Twice Go Ahead Eagles
On Wednesday the cup game is scheduled and three days later PSV travels to Deventer for the league. The two teams have met 69 times in the premier league. PSV has a positive record against the current number seven in the premier league, with 47 wins, 10 draws and 12 defeats. The main force was also often treacherous in these encounters with 183 goals scored.
The last time PSV played against the same premier league club twice within one week was against Sparta Rotterdam in the 2021-2022 season. In the league game, PSV did not get beyond a 0-0 at home. Three days later the two teams met again, but this time at Het Kasteel in the cup tournament. PSV won 2-1 and advanced to the next round.
