PSV will meet its most difficult opponent historically on Sunday: Feyenoord. No club has lost more often than the Rotterdammers, no less than 54 times. At home, however, PSV is on an impressive run, with 49 games in a row without defeat in all competitions.
Feyenoord are in fourth place in the Eredivisie this season. After 16 matches, Brian Priske's team has collected 35 points, seven fewer than the leaders, PSV. However, the Rotterdammers are doing well in the UEFA Champions League: with two more points they are eighteenth, five places higher than PSV.
Recent encounters
PSV and Feyenoord last met at the beginning of this season in the battle for the Johan Cruijff Schaal. There was no winner after 90 minutes, but in the ensuing penalty shootout Feyenoord drew the longest. The most recent meeting in the Eredivisie also ended in a draw. The two teams drew 2-2 at Philips Stadium on March 3. Malik Tillman gave PSV an early lead, but the Rotterdammers turned things around to take a 2-1 lead. Guus Til scored the equalizer in the 71st minute, leaving both teams to settle for one point.
Year end
PSV is usually strong in the last game of the calendar year. Four of the first ten end-of-year matches were lost, but since then the team has only gone down four times. The overall balance is 42 wins, 18 ties and eight defeats. The last time PSV lost the year-end game was in 2022, when it lost 1-0 to AZ.
Rick Karsdorp
For Rick Karsdorp, it will be a special match. The right back played a total of 123 official matches for Feyenoord, spread over two periods. Yet it is not the first time he has faced his old club. With AS Roma, he has faced Feyenoord three times before. In the UEFA Conference League final, AS Roma drew 1-0. A year later, the Romans eliminated Feyenoord in the UEFA Europa League, this time after penalty kicks. Besides Rick, Guus Til also played in the shirt of the Rotterdammers, he came to 49 matches.
