PSV and Essiën Bassey have agreed on a one-year contract extension. The 18-year-old right wing defender will join PSV U21 next season.
The Aalten-born Essiën made the switch from De Graafschap to PSV in 2022. At the time, he joined the O16. One year later, his development was rewarded with his first professional contract. This season, the right wing defender proved his worth in PSV O19, with which he recently crowned himself national champion after a thrilling final against AZ.
"Essiën excels with his running ability and, in addition, he is strong on the ball," says Technical Manager Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. In 2024, he already made his debut for PSV U21 in a game with FC Eindhoven. "Next season he will fully join the U23 team and will get the chance to develop further in professional football."
Essiën, meanwhile, knows what he has to do. "I just have to start getting a lot of minutes and eventually I have to enforce that myself. At PSV U21 you get the chance to prove yourself in professional football and I want to seize that opportunity with both hands."
