100 years of PSV! On this particularly memorable day for the club, the C1 entered their first cup match against AFC from Amsterdam. Could the team also brighten up the day by combining good play with a good result? In any case: 'nobility obliges'. Because last season, PSV C1 won the cup. And last Tuesday they won the Super Cup at the expense of AZ.
Right at the referee's first whistle, it started to rain lightly. Nice for the field, but certainly also nice to be able to play a high ball pace. PSV started strong and was clearly the better team from the beginning. And that soon manifested itself in the opening goal. In the 10th minute, striker Cody Gakpo was stopped illegally about 18 meters from the goal. Leandro Fernandes positioned himself behind the ball and scooped the ball right onto the head of Justin Lonwijk, who cleverly headed the ball over the goalkeeper into the far corner. After fifteen minutes of play, the Eindhoven team doubled the score. Gaetan Bosiers played Justin in from the edge of the 16, and with a velvet touch Justin set Cody free in front of the goalie. The striker was then able to get around the goalkeeper and score: 2-0.
Only halfway through the first half goalkeeper Arne Lekens had to intervene once. A long-distance shot, however, was a simple prey for Arne. About eight minutes before halftime, left striker Yasin Aalilou put the game to bed. He was sent off at the right moment by Lars Dickens and scored fabulously from about the back line high into the far corner: 3-0!
In the second half, PSV continued to look to extend the lead under the delightful sunshine. It took until the 44th minute before that actually happened. A cross from occasional right back Baggio Wallenburg (who did a fine job) was released by the Amsterdam goalkeeper. After which Justin was the first to slide the ball in. After a free kick from Leandro Fernandes skimmed past the crossbar, Justin scored his third of the day after taking advantage of poor Amsterdam defending. Not much later, substitute Remco Evenepoel was close to making it 6-0. A quick switch on the right side brought the ball to Remco who boldly took Yasin's cross on his flick. Unfortunately his effort went just wide. After Gaetan Bosiers also missed a great chance to score, it was Justin again who scored. Cody Gakpo seemed to turn into the crowd in the 16-yard area, but with a lot of turning and turning he was able to play Justin, who finished.
Just before time AFC saved the honor after an inattention in the PSV defense was punished. The final chord, however, was for PSV. James Fofana put the ball perfectly between the back line and the goalkeeper. The latter came out and thought he could kick the ball away. But Leandro was just ahead of him and kicked the ball over the goalkeeper via the underside of the crossbar into the goal.
A fine, justified and unflattering result. It might even have been higher. PSV C1 has in any case come through the first group match for the cup very well. Can the team continue this next Saturday in the first league match against JOVZ? Come and watch at the Herdgang!
