Warned by the course of the cup game against FC Twente last month, in which Twente fought their way back into the game just after falling behind and PSV rubbed in that the spoils are not in until the final signal, PSV traveled to Hengelo on Saturday for the league. PSV played an excellent 1st half in which they built up a very comfortable 0-4 lead, but let it be followed by a weak 2nd, in which they let Twente come back into the game completely. Despite the eventual big win, PSV were left with a hungover feeling after the match, just like after the earlier cup game.
Twente had no chance in the first half against PSV, who created one 100% chance after another and actually did themselves wrong by 'only' going into the break with a 0-4 lead. PSV knew, sometimes with fantastic cross passes, to reach the outside players who then managed to put the ball ready for incoming players. Jaëll Hattu shot the 0-1 after a good preparatory action by Arnaut Groeneveld, who in an almost identical way enabled Joey Konings (who just before that outsmarted the Twente goalkeeper with a beautiful lob) to tap in the 0-3 and on the stroke of halftime he himself received the 0-4 on a silver platter from Jaëll Hattu, who punched a hesitant Twente defender and then put the ball in front of him.
Although coach Kristof Aelbrecht emphatically pointed out at halftime the danger of slackening and nonchalance in the 2nd half due to the lead, that was exactly what happened just like in the earlier cup game against Twente. PSV was not a shadow of the team in the 1st half, letting themselves be overrun by the struggling Twente and giving Twente the chance to get back into the game. Within less than 20 minutes Twente scored 2 goals and shot at the post, which PSV did nothing in return. In the end, Twente were unable to convert their superiority into goals in the second half, and Joey Konings scored the 2-5 just before the end, following a pass from Jaëll Hattu.
A fine result for the B2 , which is still unbeaten leader, but which masks the big difference in level in both halves.
