  1. Match report

After playing a couple of practice matches in which the team of trainers Edwin de Wijs and Joonas Kolkka remained unbeaten, today the match for the Super Cup was scheduled. On the vv De Meern pitch, the Eindhoven Cup winner faced champion AZ.

The initial phase was for PSV, with most of the ball possession for the Eindhoven team. However, without creating any chances. It was AZ that provided the first hint through a distance shot. Which goalkeeper Arne Lekens easily defused. PSV was sloppy in the final stages and failed to capitalize on a number of opportunities. Still, PSV took the lead. On the edge of the goal area, Cody Gakpo was brought down. Justin Lonwijk got behind the ball in the 11th minute and curled it beautifully into the bottom left corner: 0-1. Because the forwards were on the edge of offside several times, and were (wrongly?) whistled back, it remained just that one goal in the first half.

After halftime, AZ put higher pressure. And partly due to sloppy play by PSV, the Alkmaar team had most of the ball possession in the early stages. But just like in the first half, the team could not create any real chances. As the second half progressed, PSV regained the initiative. A brilliant cross from Gaetan Bosiers put Amar Catiç free in front of the Alkmaar goalie in the 55th minute. He rounded the goalkeeper easily and slid the ball in: 0-2.

PSV had some opportunities to extend the score after this goal. That did not happen. And because AZ did not score either, PSV won the Super Cup. Given the odds, a deserved victory.
