Match report:
Anyone who had predicted beforehand a result of 1-8 in the match Willem II D1 - PSV D1 would probably have been declared crazy.
Willem II is the eternal archrival of PSV for the championship. As such, this topper is always a fraught/charged match. Both teams were still undefeated. PSV still with the 100%-score. Willem II with 2 loss points, but with the least passed defense.
PSV set the tone from the kickoff with more than good football, fast combinations and a lot of pressure on the opponent. The first chance after 2 minutes was still shot past the Willem II goal. The second chance after 4 minutes was saved from the goal line by Willem II at the last minute. However, on the third chance the goal did come. PSV took the lead - at that moment more than deserved - although PSV got some help from Willem II's defense through an own goal. Less than a minute later, PSV scored again after a fantastic diagonal shot into the crossbar. From that moment on, Willem II was shown all corners of the pitch and had nothing to contribute against an unleashed PSV. One attack after another rolled towards the Willem II goal, PSV sliced left and right - seemingly simple - through the Willem II defense, only PSV did not score (yet). Just before halftime, the Willem II defense - under pressure - made a mistake. Following a free kick by Willem II itself around the midline, PSV cleverly intercepted the ball and mercilessly punished the opponent with the third goal. On the stroke of half-time, the Willem II goalkeeper choked on the speed of the PSV forward. And promptly number 4 was in the Willem II net.
After halftime, Willem II played a bit more compact, but the picture remained the same. PSV still played at a high tempo and - above all - concentrated, as PSV did not give away a single chance. After another quick and smooth attack, PSV put an end to all illusions of Willem II coming back in the second half. Willem II did get a sort of honorary goal shortly thereafter from a pure offside position (waved away by the referee). PSV answered this blemish with another 3 goals via high school football. In the end, Willem II was happy with the whistle for the end. Who knows what would have happened had the match lasted 10 minutes longer.
