Before the match, PSV was the only team in the league that had not yet lost a point. After big wins over Vitesse and Alphense Boys (5-1 and 1-4 respectively), the home game against Feyenoord was on the program today. The Rotterdammers had a lousy start to the league, losing 7-2 to fellow city fellow Sparta. After which it recovered somewhat against NAC, a 2-1 victory. A win today would put PSV six points behind the Rotterdammers. But then they would have to play 70 minutes first.
The weather conditions were very different from last weekend: compared to about 25 degrees last week, we had to make do with about half that today. Fortunately, it stayed dry. In the messy early stages, PSV struggled to keep the ball in the team and put Feyenoord under pressure. The biggest chance was even for the guests, but Niek Janssen saved skilfully from a close-range effort. Despite the inferior play, PSV also had chances in the first half. Sami Bouhoudane shot the ball over once, and saw a slider deflected away. Sven van der Plas saw a backward header hit the bar. The home side were unlucky again after half an hour, when Sami tapped in a corner from Nicolas Verkooijen, but a Feyenoord player on the line saved the ball. The game remained scoreless at halftime.
PSV started sharper after the break and immediately threatened through Sami when he headed a cross from Onesime Zimuangana just over the crossbar. But Feyenoord also had a great chance in the early stages of the second half, which was defused by Niek. PSV clearly took the initiative in the course of the second half. And finally showed what it is capable of on the football pitch. A smooth attack passed between Nicoloas and Peter Quispel after which Onesime headed just wide. It was finally in the 55th minute that PSV opened the scoring. However, it needed a penalty for that when Jordy Bawuah was run into his back close to the Feyenoord goal. Nicolas took care of the penalty and shot it in impeccably: 1-0. A few minutes later, PSV doubled the score. It broke out on the right wing through Nicolas who put Sami to work. Sami spotted up next to Onesime, laid the ball wide after which it was a breeze for Onesime to score the 2-0. Feyenoord seemed to be broken, and PSV liberated. The only thing missing was that the home team failed to extend the score further. After a great attack over several drives, Nicolas shot at the post, and efforts by Peter, Onesime, Raf van de Riet, Jordy and Sami were ineffective.
Thus, after a strong second half, PSV deservedly won over Feyenoord and remains clear with 9 out of 3. Next week awaits the away game against AZ. Another great game.
