Location: Alphense Boys - De Bijlen
The third cup match was scheduled today. Where PSV had a 100% score, Alphense Boys was handsomely (together with Heerenveen) on 3 points after a victory in Maastricht over MVV.
An opponent not to be underestimated. So a nice challenge today for trainer Joonas Kolkka. Who in the absence of trainer Edwin de Wijs (had to pass the last phase for his trainer's certificate today. And did so successfully!), carried the responsibility.
PSV started well and the first chances and opportunities soon followed. None of the attempts resulted in a goal. Alphense Boys could only reach the forwards via the long ball. And apart from a shot after 12 minutes, the home team did not come close.
Despite the field advantage, it took until the 22nd minute before PSV opened the scoring. An attack on the left went over several drives when the ball got to striker Matthias Verreth, who simply scored the 0-1. Completely out of nowhere, Alphense Boys came alongside just before halftime when the striker shot in from close range off a cross over our left side. PSV did not let up and a minute later it was 1-2 again. Once again Matthias was the goal scorer when he was the first to clear a Karim Bannani effort.
In the 2nd half, the Eindhoven team continued to dictate play. Being sloppy with the chances, the margin remained one goal. And it is cup football. So pay attention! In the 47th minute, however, the defense did not do that sufficiently and it allowed Alphense Boys to come alongside again via a beautiful goal. Indeed, the home team took the lead 5 minutes later. PSV had to work hard and created chances. Luck was not on their side though. The ball was cleared off the line 3 times today. The field was getting longer and longer and the midfielders were unable to keep up. In the final minutes Alphense Boys decided the game when they scored once more.
PSV got a lesson in effectiveness today and Alphen ad Rijn was celebrating for a long time. Coach Kolkka experienced a bad start as coach. Positive for him is that it can only get better in terms of results....
