The B2 continues unabated on its chosen path. While last week the team secured the lead in the league, Saturday the team reached the next round in the cup competition by knocking off leader MVV, where trainer Kristof Aelbrecht was under contract as a player when he was young, in the group stage.
At MVV's new national home ground, it was not a great match, partly due to the poor pitch that makes it very difficult to play good and fast combination play. PSV's first real dangerous moment therefore consisted of a distance shot by Marco Weymans, who had a good shot from 25 meters but saw the ball go just wide. Yet shortly before the halftime signal, PSV managed to get in front of the Maastricht goal and become dangerous. In the 34th minute Yentl Meijssen headed a good cross from Karim Bannani just wide, and Robin Schoonbrood saw his effort stopped by the goalkeeper after a good preparatory action on the right by Lennerd Daneels. 2 Minutes before halftime the goal was finally scored. Striker Yentl Meijssen shot a tight low cross from Lennerd Daneels from the right into the net, 0-1.
In the slightly better second half, PSV had a clear advantage, although it produced fewer real chances than in the first half. The biggest chance shortly after halftime was for Karim Bannani, who misjudged a cross from the right at the far post and saw it go over. Lennerd Daneels finally scored the decisive goal with an excellent individual action in the 48th minute. At full speed he entered the Maastricht penalty area from the right, left a couple of defenders in the dust and shot dry and low to make it 0-2. All in all a deserved victory for the B2 in Maastricht and a round further in the cup competition.
