The first chance of the match was for PSV after five minutes after a wrong kick out from the Vitesse goalie. The ball came to Ruben who played it wide to Milan van de Riet. His shot went just wide. The game played out for a long time in the midfield. Hardly any chances were created by either team. Only in the last ten minutes of the first half did both teams come closer to scoring a goal. A Vitesse cross went wide and a PSV free kick went just over. In the 30th minute Kevin saved a shot by a Vitesse player and one minute later a nice shot by Jesse was tapped just wide by an equally nice save by the Vitesse goalie. In the 33rd minute, PSV took the lead. Dyon sent Milan van de Riet into the depths with a through ball. In the penalty area Milan rounded a Vitesse player and was tapped. The referee put the ball on the spot and it was Milan himself who shot the ball 1-0. This was also the score at halftime.

Immediately after the start of the second half Vitesse had a great chance to equalize. In the scrimmage in front of the PSV goal Jules was eventually able to catch the ball. In the 40th minute, PSV had a chance to extend the score further. Milan van de Riet's shot was turned away by the Vitesse goalie. Vitesse then pressed on and put PSV under pressure. PSV could not get out from under the Vitesse pressure. In the 52nd minute the visitors had a good opportunity to score after a fast breakaway. Jules just managed to turn the effort into a corner. One minute later Vitesse got the equalizer they deserved. A shot from outside the box fell through the underside of the crossbar to make it 1-1. Vitesse continued to push forward and that gave them the lead in the 57th minute. A Vitesse striker was able to dribble unhindered through the center of the defense and shot the ball into the far corner 1-2. After this deficit, it was PSV who went in search of a goal and it fell in the 66th minute. A sharp cross from Ruben fell behind the Vitesse goalie to make it 2-2. PSV continued to push but no more goals were scored so that both teams had to be satisfied with one point.
