    PSV again loses out

After last week's unfair loss in Zwolle, PSV had a chance in Saturday's home game against Vitesse to put themselves among the top four teams with the prospect of qualifying for the champions' pool in the second half of the competition. The team started very energetically with a nice early goal, but eventually drifted off the pitch grumpy after having to acknowledge Vitesse's superiority after 80 minutes.

PSV got off to an excellent start and managed to translate that into a quick lead. Already in the sixth minute, Chahid, who had been left free at the far post by the Arnhem defenders, was able to ease a ball that fell at his feet into the net, 1-0. Vitesse did not give PSV much time to enjoy the lead. Less than 10 minutes later, an attacker poked the equalizer in at the far post after a low cross from the right, 1-1. On the stroke of halftime, PSV narrowly avoided going behind when the ball could only just be cleared by Niek after a scrimmage in the five meters.

In the second half, Vitesse took the initiative and played better than PSV, helped by the scoring. Five minutes after the break the Arnheimers again scored the 1-2 from a scrimmage in which Niek initially made an excellent save, followed less than six minutes later by the 1-3 from a counter in which the PSV defenders were played out of position and a Vitesse attacker with the ball at his feet was able to head towards Niek and pass him with a placed ball into the far corner. Actually, PSV could not match that in terms of chances in the second half. Yet there was still hope for the Eindhoven side after Jaivy managed to convert one of the few dangerous moments, after a good preparatory action by Ruben who passed the ball sharply and hard, from close range to make it 2-3. After Vitesse missed an opportunity to make it 2-4 in the remaining minutes, PSV came awfully close to an equalizer in the last minute. Ruben took a free kick in the penalty area, but his shot skimmed past the cross. Final score 2-3.

PSV plays Saturday in the return round at 12:30 at home against leader De Graafschap, who lost the first league game in Doetinchem 5-2. PSV therefore has something to put right on Saturday.
