PSV got off to an energetic start. Ajax kicked off and after 15 seconds Milan van de Riet had captured the ball. He went off alone towards the Ajax goalie but was brought down inside the penalty area. The penalty kick was shot in by Milan himself 1-0. The tone was set, but PSV could not push on after that. Ajax was also unable to create any real chances except for a header that was well caught by Kevin Gadellaa. On the PSV side, Milan van de Riet had the best opportunity to score but a tackle prevented Milan from shooting. In the last ten minutes of the first half, PSV got a better grip on the game and became more dangerous. A few minutes before half time a shot by Deveron Fonville hit the post, but in the injury time of the first half PSV still managed to score. A corner by Mohammed Nassoh was headed in hard by Jesse Giebels, 2-0.
PSV started the second half strongly and already had two good opportunities to extend the score further in the first five minutes. However, both shots went just over allowing PSV to keep Ajax alive. A few minutes later Ajax had a good opportunity but Jules Janssen was alert and defused the shot. Moments later it was Jules again who prevented a goal by turning an Ajax player's shot into a corner. Ajax started to take more risks at the back and looked emphatically for the tying goal. PSV had to fight back but remained dangerous with fast breakaways. In the 57th minute the tying goal came after all. An attack on the left was tapped in at the far post by an Ajax player, 2-1. Ajax continued to press but PSV held firm. Two minutes before time the equalizer came. A cross from an Ajax player was shot in hard, 2-2. In injury time, PSV had an opportunity to take the win. The hard shot was turned away by the Ajax goalie, so both teams had to settle for a draw.
