The report
For PSV, after the week-long cup game away at AFC (0-5 win), the third league match was on the program. The opponent was promoted FC Twente. It was the fourth league game for the Rotterdammers. And the team achieved very good results. A fine 0-2 win at AZ. After that they held Ajax to 1-1 at home and then suffered a narrow defeat at Feyenoord (2-1). PSV was thus warned in advance that the promoted team is something of a giant killer.
The opening phase was clearly for PSV. The home team played with three defenders, allowing the Eindhoveners to often get past them at speed. This also led to big chances. For example, Jesper Uneken came very close to scoring the opening goal in the fourth minute after receiving the ball from Shi-jon Martina. A few minutes later Lars Putters opened at Iggy Houben, who then passed the ball to Livano Comenencia, who was coming along. Unfortunately Livano hit the goalkeeper instead of the goal. After Jesper hit the bar with a header from a Livano cross a little later, both teams seemed to be heading for the dressing rooms. But in the space of two minutes just before halftime, PSV took a clear lead: Iggy Houben received the ball from Isaac Babadi, sprinted with the ball at his feet and finished calmly. A minute later, it was again the tandem Isaac - Iggy who provided a goal: 0-2.
After halftime, PSV consolidated the lead. It still got chances, but was sloppy in its choices and in the final pass. This kept Twente believing in a good result. On those occasions when the home side became dangerous, goalkeeper Niek Schiks was on hand. With about six minutes to play, PSV seemed to decide the game. The Twente goalkeeper let go of a shot by Ruben van Bommel after which Lars Putters was quick to tap the ball over the goal line. Unfortunately for Lars he was whistled back for offside. In the 66th minute the game seemed to get exciting after all when the home team (rightly) got a penalty. Fortunately it was shot hard against the post. In the final minute, PSV decided the match completely when goalkeeper Niek Schiks put Iggy to work with a far, clean kick. From the center line he out-sprinted his direct opponent and slid the ball into the far corner. A great goal and a hat trick for Iggy today.
Thus, PSV took the three points from Twente today and can look forward to the next match: away at leaders Vitesse.
