PSV recovered well from the unjust defeat in the last league game against Feyenoord. Twan Scheepers' team recorded a fine 1-3 victory at Sparta, although the match had two faces. Another win was that after months of transfer problems the Belgian Marco Weijmans could finally be called upon, who after months of watching was finally allowed to play for real.
PSV played a strong first half and rewarded themselves already in the 3rd minute with a beautiful goal. Midfielder Steven Bergwijn with the ball glued to his foot bridged a large part of the Sparta half to the back line, and then put the ball at the 2nd post at the feet of the completely free Arnaut Groeneveld, who could easily tap in, 0-1. Although Sparta had a good chance to equalize, it seemed to be waiting for the 0-2. Steven Bergwijn put Youandi Renfurm in front of the goalkeeper with a beautiful cross and Mattias Verreth came face to face with the goalkeeper after a nice pass from Arnaut Groeveveld, but in the end we had to wait until the 27th minute for the 0-2 to fall. An awarded free kick about 25 meters from the goal was curled brilliantly into the left corner by captain Philippe Rommens. A comfortable lead, although Sparta narrowed the gap shortly before half-time from a dubious penalty kick, apparently awarded for holding by a defender, although the referee curiously gave a yellow card to midfielder Philippe Rommens.
The second half presented a very different match picture. Whereas PSV dominated the first 40 minutes and Sparta could not make a fist of it, the Rotterdammers came out of the dressing room after halftime fierce and driven, and PSV struggled. Nevertheless, the lead was not relinquished and PSV put the game to bed shortly before time, when striker Mattias Verreth was put in front of the goalkeeper with a fine ball by Youandi Renfurm. He did not let this opportunity pass him by and shot the ball calmly into the right corner, 1-3. All in all a good victory for the B2.
