  1. Match report

The second round of competition was scheduled today. After the first round, the standings were nicely balanced: 4 teams with full wins, 4 teams with 1 point and 4 teams still scoreless. And it seems that the league planner had foresight. Because the 4 teams that reached a win in the first round happened to play each other today. Sparta R'dam vs Fc Den Bosch and......MVV vs PSV.

With a delay of fifteen minutes (both teams were wearing their home jerseys, so both red-white-white), the game started at 1:30 p.m. By now it had become dry, but there was a brisk wind across the field. PSV immediately took control of the match and through captain Justin Lonwijk was close to the opening goal. His effort hit the bar, however.

After 5 minutes the lead ebbed away. Mainly because 3 errors in a short space of time gave MVV the idea that PSV could also be vulnerable. Fortunately these errors were not punished. PSV recovered somewhat, but those moments when it could have scored itself, it failed to do so. Striker Cody Gakpo had a couple of chances in front of the goal, but could not find the net. Armando Obispo also came close with a free kick that went just over. In addition, the MVV goalkeeper kept Baggio Wallenburg and James Fofana from scoring. However, it was MVV that scored first. A free kick on PSV's left in the 32nd minute was laid down by MVV at the 2nd post where a Maastricht player was completely free and easily put the 1-0 on the scoreboard. Just after that, Cody was close to the equalizer but he needed just too much time.

In the second half Baggio was immediately dangerous with a shot that went just over. After MVV was dangerous with a header, they escaped when an Armando free kick caromed just over the wall.

In the 50th minute, after another sloppiness in the build-up, an MVV player was able to go after goalkeeper Arne Lekens on his own. With a clever reaction he fortunately prevented the 2nd MVV goal.

In the 55th minute, PSV was finally able to score the equalizer. They needed a penalty to do so, which Justin scored flawlessly. This penalty was rightly given when an MVV defender hit a Leandro Fernandes effort out of the goal mouth with his hand. Apart from the penalty he was immediately shown the red card. Because PSV had to leave the field with an injury to Lars Dickens at the same moment, the match continued with 10 against 10.

With 3 minutes left to play, the Eindhoven team even had to continue with 9 men. Left back Ruud van Breemen was injured and was unable to continue the match. MVV almost took advantage of the numerical majority when a cross was headed just over. MVV also had to play the last few minutes with nine men after a defender pulled Cody Gakpo to the ground when he threatened to break through. The awarded free kick was kicked into the side netting by Armando.

With that, the last opportunity to turn this crazy game into a victory passed.

For those interested, Sparta won 3-0 at home against Den Bosch.
