Leaders PSV D2 left Saturday morning for Waalwijk for the away match against Willem II/RKC D2, the number two of the league table. Situation beforehand: PSV has 42 points from 15 games played, Willem II/RKC has 33 points, but has already played 16 games. The league lasts 22 games, so if PSV wins, Willem II/RKC can be considered definitely eliminated for the championship. Then the match.
PSV starts the match strong. Already in the first minute, Ymanuel Hurkmans, who fifteen minutes later has to leave the field injured after a wild charge, slaloms through the defense of Willem II/RKC. He plays Matthias Verreth, who shoots the ball wide via the outside of the post. A minute later it is Mink Peeters who, after a nice action, puts Matthias in position; the goalkeeper saves his header. After these fine chances, there is an opportunity for the home team, but they too fail to hit the target. Twan Scheepers' men continued their opening offensive. This leads to a debatable decision when Matthias is put in a hold just inside the sixteen meter: no penalty after this ippon, but a free kick against. Not much later, a goal by our Belgian striker is also disallowed for offside. After about ten minutes, PSV lost their grip on the game. PSV's play gets messier, the match becomes more balanced and Willem II/RKC take up the fight without really creating any major opportunities. In the 20th minute, Dante Rigo thinks it is enough. Coming from midfield, he soloed to the five-meter and finished in a controlled manner: 0-1. A minute later, Matthias almost increases the lead with a shot that goes just wide. Just as PSV seemed to be taking control of the game again, the home team equalized when a corner was headed in. Five minutes before halftime, there are two more opportunities for PSV. First there is an attack on the left with Mink playing Ertem Bölükbas, Ertem lays back to Dante and Dante shoots over. The last opportunity before half time is for Mink who, played well by Daan Winter, sees his effort just blocked. With a 1-1 score, the teams went to rest.
The opening phase of the second half is for Willem II/RKC. They get a good opportunity to score, but Ieke Scheerhoorn prevents PSV from going behind. Gradually, PSV takes back control of the match. This leads to another lead for PSV in the ninth minute. A free kick from the right side is brought into the penalty area by Jeroen Swinkels, Zohair Labyad takes the ball and shoots the ball from the turn into the far corner: 1-2. After this goal, a number of opportunities follow for PSV. Giovanni Nicolaas sends Daan deep and his cross is just missed by Mink. The next chance is for Matthias who extends a free kick from Dante, but cannot give enough direction. Then there are shots from Dante and Mink that are caught by the goalkeeper. In between, Ieke saves another shot from the home team. Then it is PSV's turn again as Matthias taps a cross from Daan at the first post wide and Daan himself, who fires an inswinging pass from Gio out of the turn wide. The last opportunity is for Mink who shoots well into the short corner after a combination with Matthias, but the goalkeeper saves. Willem II/RKC tries to squeeze out a final offensive and gets a small opportunity that is not taken. Thus, PSV wins 1-2 and takes 3 hard-fought points from Waalwijk. A deserved victory because PSV was better for most of the match and created more opportunities. Moreover, it was once again confirmed that Twan Scheepers' team can not only play good football, but can also fight as a team for a victory.
With the victory over Willem II/RKC, PSV D2 has one more competitor in the battle for the title, FC Den Bosch D2. PSV has 45 points from 16 matches, FC Den Bosch 30 from 14, so the difference is 9 loss points in favor of PSV. So with six games left to play, including the home game against FC Den Bosch, the championship is getting closer and closer. Hopefully Ym will have thrown off the crutches by then and recover soon.
