PSV played a game with a painful sense of déjà vu in Utrecht on Saturday. Although warned by the course of the last game against Willem II/RKC, the B2 again played a game with two faces, with the result that the points stayed in Utrecht.
In the first half PSV played fine, and could only blame themselves for not taking advantage of the large number of chances created, mostly after excellent combinations. It was not until the 30th minute that PSV opened the scoring with a nice goal by Youandi Renfurm, who was sent off by Sam Lammers with a beautiful cross to the Utrecht goalkeeper and passed him in a controlled manner with a placed ball into the bottom right corner. However, PSV did not manage to hold onto the lead until the halftime signal. Captain Maarten Peijnenburg, who returned to the team after a four match suspension, fouled a Utrecht player in the penalty area with an uncontrolled move one minute before halftime. The penalty awarded by the referee, although touched by the excellent Thomas Hooyberghs, was shot into the left side netting, 1-1.
Although the 2nd half started excellently -right striker Arnaut Groeneveld already registered the 1-2 in the 3rd minute with a placed shot after a nice pass from Steven Bergwijn- the B2 could not maintain the game of the 1st half and let FC Utrecht fight their way to victory. Just like the game the week before, PSV played a weak 2nd half and was outplayed by FC Utrecht on the basis of effort and match mentality, which also benefited from personal mistakes in the Eindhoven defense in both goals it scored. Although that did not detract from their own mediocre performance and "only" would have led to a different result, there was also déjà vu in that PSV, as in the last game, were denied a valid goal for alleged offside, after an otherwise fantastic attack. Chris Hagi played in Emilio Prieto y Gorgosz just over the halfway line, who took the ball with a brilliant move and passed it tightly from the back line to the incoming Maarten Peijenburg, who shot in hard and low, but was whistled off by the referee. Even a 3-3 result would not have taken away the bad taste of the 2nd half.
