Despite it being Carnival time, PSV C1 faced Alphense Boys in the quarterfinals of the cup. A familiar team for the team of trainers Edwin de Wijs and Joonas Kolkka, as they lost 4-2 in the group stage. For the Eindhoven team there was not much at stake at that point. But apart from that, Alphense Boys is an opponent you cannot and should not underestimate. They are doing well in the league. Witness their 1-0 victory over Ajax last week.
PSV was thus warned and took the game well from the start. After 4 minutes they almost took the lead when midfielder Dante Rigo lobbed striker Matthias Verreth alone in front of the goalkeeper. Unfortunately for Matthias, the ball went back into the field at the bottom of the crossbar. Although PSV had a substantial field advantage, they did not really create many chances. Alphense Boys did not give much space away at the back and lurked for the counter with the long ball. So it was not really surprising that the opening goal came from a stoppage time situation. In the 27th minute, Dante took a free kick from the left side. And placed it perfectly in the free space where the incoming Kaan Tanriver placed his head against the ball and headed in hard and high: 1-0! Because the team was not always sharp in the final phase of the attacks or made the wrong choice, it remained 1-0 until halftime.
After the resumption, PSV quickly built the lead. In the 39th minute, Karim Bannani came through well on the left. His cross was cleared, but the ball ended up at the feet of Dante, who took advantage of the opportunity and easily made it 2-0. Ten minutes later Dante scored again. This time he took a free kick about 20 meters from the goal. A chance for Dante who generally knows how to deal with this. And now he did: via a bounce he deposited the ball into the left corner. 3-0 and the game is in the bag. PSV played the game out professionally. But just before the end of the game, PSV still had to concede a goal. Again, the goal fell from a substitution. Alphense Boys was allowed to take a free kick on our left side and the striker who had just entered the game headed the ball well past goalkeeper Mike van de Meulenhof. This made the final score 3-1. When the referee whistled the final whistle, the qualification for the semi-finals was a fact. The opponent is Ajax, Feyenoord and Almere City, who beat Sparta.
A fine victory in which the ball was played around nicely, there was a real team and (apart from half a chance) nothing was given away.
