The B2 had a difficult task ahead of them on Saturday in Alkmaar against last season's O16 champion, whose selection this year consisted of players passed on from last year's C1 team, which also won the league championship. That it pays to start from one's own qualities and not so much look at the status of the opponent was shown again in this match, in which PSV after an exciting scoring sequence shortly before the final signal finally took the victory.
PSV played an excellent first half in which AZ was forced back into their own half with uninhibited and attacking play. With beautiful attacks mostly over the sides where there was a lot of space for the attackers, PSV created a large number of good opportunities. The fact that AZ took the lead in the 22nd minute from the first real attack that came close to Youri Roulaux's goal was completely disproportionate and did not affect the Eindhoven players' play. The only reproach PSV could and should be made in the 1st half was that it 'did not reward itself' as it is called these days. From the considerable number of chances created, only Joey Konings and Matthias Verreth managed to score a goal, with the result that PSV did not go into the break with a large lead but had to watch AZ make it 2-2 on the stroke of halftime.
In the 2nd half, PSV was less dominant, and AZ got into the game a bit better. And although that also resulted in a few dangerous situations in front of the PSV goal, from which AZ also made the later 3-3 in the 67th minute, the Alkmaar defenders also kept their hands full in the 2nd half against the very active and physically strong Eindhoven attackers. Where left striker Arnaut Groeneveld found the Alkmaar goalkeeper in his way in the 46th minute in a 1-1 situation and shot into the side netting in the rebound, right striker Joey Konings got possession of the ball in the Alkmaar 16 in the 63rd minute after good high pressure by Lassana Faye and shot the 2-3 in the far corner without hesitation. Although AZ equalized shortly after, it was striker Matthias Verreth who deservedly rewarded the team with the full win 2 minutes before the end. Joey Konings intercepted a poorly defended ball just outside the penalty area and sent Matthias alone towards the Alkmaar goalkeeper. Matthias did not let this chance slip away and scored the deserved 3-4.
An excellent result for Kristof Aelbrecht's team, which hasn't lost a game this season despite having already faced all the top teams in the league.
