Playing football for the cup on a Wednesday afternoon in early March. That was on the menu for PSV's o15. In the quarterfinals of the cup, Fc Twente was the opponent. Would the Tukkers serve as a starter in this cup round? After which the winner of this duel would meet Ajax in the semifinals (strangely enough, the draw had already taken place). And for dessert, if they won that match, play the final. That would be a wonderful scenario.
But order and sequence......first we had to deal with the leader of the first division: Fc Twente. And that it would not be a simple job, that was clear beforehand. In the preparation for the new season, coach Edwin de Wijs' team lost 1-2 in Eindhoven. Now it was an away game.
PSV started convincingly and soon strung some chances together. In the 3rd minute, a corner by captain Damian Timan almost went in at the far post. And two minutes later an effort from Yorbe Vertessen went straight at the Twente goalkeeper.
After 10 minutes of play PSV was very close to scoring the opening goal. In the transition it was very dangerous when Yorbe was sent deep on the right. His ball ended up with Dennis Vos, who hit the post and Mo Ihattaren hit the goalkeeper in the rebound.
After Twente made their first appearance in the 14th minute with a long-distance shot, PSV deservedly took the lead in the 19th minute. This time Yorbe went through on the left flank and not selfishly laid the ball wide to Dennis who sprinted along and easily scored the 0-1.
Just 5 minutes later Damian made it 0-2. Beslan Sagov picked up the ball on the left and delivered a fine cross which landed on the head of Damian who needed 2 attempts to pass the keeper. A beautiful moment for him, as it allowed him to honor the just deceased father of a friend in a beautiful way.
Just before halftime, PSV was able to put the game to bed. Damian tried from the right but his ball did not go into the goal. The attack continued after which Jochem van Dijk put the ball on the head of Yorbe. This time, however, Yorbe aimed too high. The score at halftime was therefore 1-1.
After some delay (Twente stayed away for a long time, much to the referee's annoyance), the second half turned out to be a messy one. Twente wanted to but could not, PSV lacked sharpness.
Still, the Eindhoven players managed to score three more goals. First it was Damian who scored again. After a foul on Yorbe, he knew how to take the awarded free kick some 20 meters away.
Two minutes later Yorbe ruthlessly punished a mistake by Twente and decided the game: 0-4.
After substitute Thijs Martens missed another great opportunity, promising attacks were (wrongly) flagged off prematurely, PSV scored the 0-5 in the 65th minute. A magnificent long pass from Shurandy Sambo was appreciated by Yorbe and with a subtle foot movement he passed the goalie.
A fine, spacious and deserved victory. With finally again "the zero" at the back.
In the semifinals, Ajax awaits us in Amsterdam. It would be a wonderful reward to get on the bus as a victor there too and then play the cup final.
